US condemned at OAS opening over Sanctions on Venezuela

Nicaragua and Ecuador’s ambassadors to the Organization of American States (OAS) used the opening of the 41st session of the OAS to condemn US sanctions against the Venezuelan oil company, PDVSA.

US President Barack Obama ordered sanctions against the company for ignoring US sanctions against trading with Iran. Nicaraguan Ambassador Denis Moncada accused the US of attempting to “destabilize regional peace and security.” Maria Isabel Salvador, ambassador from Ecuador, expressed the “energetic rejection” of her country of any aggression against Venezuela. Moncada called the sanctions an “attack against all the ALBA countries.” ALBA is the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our Americas cooperative trade pact between Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Cuba and several other Caribbean island nations.

The OAS is meeting in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. The session was called to order by Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes and OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza. Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez was elected OAS President. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss “Citizen security in the Americas.” (El Nuevo Diario, June 6; Radio La Primerisima, June 6)
